How to Choose Crusher & Granulator Blades
Crusher blades take the largest impact loads in industrial cutting. A 30 mm M16 nut in a granulator feed will shatter a D2 blade in 200 cycles.

Crusher blades are the largest, thickest, most impact-loaded industrial blades in routine use. A 30 mm M16 nut in a granulator feed will shatter a D2 blade in 200 cycles; a tungsten carbide rotor survives 10,000+ cycles on the same feed. The right grade, geometry and bolting discipline separates a 6-month blade from a 2-week one.
One-line summary: For rock, ore, scrap, ASR: a YG15 carbide rotor with 15 % Co, 0.30 mm chamfer, 4-edge reversible, torque-wrenched at 120 Nm, rotated every 8 days.
The five crusher categories
| Type | Feed | Output | Blade T | Grade |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jaw crusher | 0.5–1.5 m | 50–300 mm | 100–300 mm | Mn-steel, 12–14 % Mn |
| Hammer mill | 0.1–0.5 m | 5–50 mm | 20–50 mm | D2, DC53, carbide |
| Granulator rotor | 0.1–1.0 m | 5–30 mm | 15–30 mm | D2, M2 HSS, YG8, YG15 |
| Rotary shear | 0.5–2.0 m | 50–200 mm | 50–100 mm | H13, carbide |
| Impact crusher | 0.05–0.3 m | 1–10 mm | 20–60 mm | High-chrome white iron |
Substrate-by-substrate grade map
| Substrate | Rotor knife | Bed knife | Hammer | Anvil |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Limestone | D2 or DC53, HRC 58 | D2, HRC 58 | D2, HRC 58 | Mn-steel, 12 % |
| Granite | YG10X, HRA 89 | YG8, HRA 89 | YG10X, HRA 89 | High-chrome white iron |
| Iron ore | YG15, HRA 88 | YG10X, HRA 89 | YG15, HRA 88 | Mn + ceramic |
| Concrete rubble | YG15, HRA 88 | YG10X, HRA 89 | YG15, HRA 88 | High-chrome white iron |
| Scrap (light) | D2, HRC 58 | D2, HRC 58 | D2, HRC 58 | Mn-steel, 12 % |
| Scrap (heavy) | YG10X, HRA 89 | YG8, HRA 89 | YG10X, HRA 89 | Mn + ceramic |
| ASR / WEEE | YG15, HRA 88 | YG10X, HRA 89 | YG15, HRA 88 | High-chrome white iron |
| Wood, biomass | M2 HSS, HRC 56 | D2, HRC 56 | M2 HSS, HRC 56 | Mild steel |
Rule: abrasive + impact = carbide 10–15 % Co. M2 HSS for clean biomass. D2 only for light, non-abrasive.
Geometry and bolting
- Edge chamfer: 0.20–0.50 mm. Larger than any other industrial blade.
- Clearance angle: 5–12° on the back face.
- Number of edges: 2-edge, 4-edge, 6-edge for thick hammers.
- Bolt pattern: 4–12 bolt holes, M12–M24, on a precision pattern.
- Bolt torque: M16 at 200 Nm, M20 at 400 Nm, M24 at 700 Nm. Calibrated torque wrench.
- Bolt lock: Nord-Lock, spring washers, or thread-locking compound. A loose bolt destroys the rotor.
A crusher blade is not sharpened like a slitter. The “edge” is a chamfer; “re-grind” restores the chamfer. Re-grind on specialised carbide grinder (diamond wheels, 0.005–0.010 mm infeed).
Bolting discipline
A loose crusher bolt is catastrophic: bolt loosens, blade shifts, blade heats, blade breaks, fragment destroys rotor. Downtime 1–3 days, €20,000–€100,000+ lost.
A proper bolting SOP: calibrated torque wrench, Nord-Lock washers, bolt tension checked at every rotation, bolts replaced every 10–20 rotations, threads lubricated per spec.
1 hour of bolting discipline per rotation saves the 3-day downtime event.
Rotation protocol
- Rotate every 5–10 days, regardless of visual wear.
- The 4 edges used in order: 1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4.
- Rotation date stamped on the blade hub.
- “When it looks dull” = 2.5-edge blade, not 4-edge.
A measured rotation protocol typically doubles the effective life per blade. Cost: 30 minutes per blade per cycle.
Field cases
ASR recycling, 1,500 kg/h rotor. 5 days on D2 (catastrophic chip). Switched to YG15, 4-edge reversible, 0.30 mm chamfer, 120 Nm torque. Rotor life: 28 days. Annual savings: €85,000.
Hard-rock hammer mill, granite, 200 kW. 8 days on D2. Switched to YG10X carbide. Hammer life: 35 days. Throughput per shift: +12 %. ROI: 6 months.
Concrete rubble, mobile impact crusher. 3 days on D2 anvils. Switched to high-chrome white iron. Anvil life: 18 days. The casting is more impact-resistant than D2 forging and survives concrete rebar.
The spec
“[Rotor knife / hammer / anvil], [L] × [W] × [T] mm, [D2 / M2 HSS / DC53 / YG8 / YG10X / YG15] per substrate table, [vacuum heat-treated / sintered] to HRC [per grade table], 5-point hardness file test, edge chamfer [0.20–0.50] mm on cutting edge, [2-edge / 4-edge / 6-edge reversible]. Bolt pattern: [drawing], torque [120–700] Nm with calibrated wrench, Nord-Lock washers required. Mill certificate with cobalt content (carbide) or ladle chemistry (tool steel) required.”
